2004-2006

So between 2004 and 2006 a lot of music was made. I (Edwin) from SpekrFreks decided to do a solo project which never officially got off the ground. Mostly because I never shopped it around. It’s mostly Pop-New Wave-Electro stuff with very emotional lyrics and sentiments.

Here is a free download of that stuff … Enjoy!

A-bear-tion!

Our new tracks just got a bid from the record label Pure Funk. The contract looks awesome, but we are still waiting for a response from three other record labels. Very exciting. It looks like 2009 will have a lot of releases for SpekrFreks.

Last night I was talking with the BF about throwing a bear dance called “A-bear-tion” The theme of the party will be red. Red and pink streamers will be hanging from the ceiling along with teddy bears hanging from wire hangers. We are hoping to get sponsored by Planned Parenthood for publicity and hopefully protesters. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

I’m kidding of course.

LA Weekend

This weekend was definitely an interesting one. I took off to LA and I had the chance to meet with someone very special to the existence of SpekrFreks. This is someone that I owe a lot of credit to. Someone who helped SpekrFreks in the beginning, someone who was actually an original member of this group. But life had changed the dynamics of our relationship and I cut off all contact with him. It was at this point in my life where I was giving up on music and really thinking about doing something else with the rest of my future. These were tough times, but during this process I met my current bandmate Bryan Phillip who inspired me to continue with the music and who turned out to be an excellent band mate.

However, it was still good to reconnect with my old band mate. With the man that originally believed in me and my music and who helped me with all of the resources he had at the time. He helped SpekrFreks become what we are today. I will always be grateful for that, no matter what had transpired between us in the end of our partnership. I mean c’mon, the man helped me produce “SanFrandisco” for heaven’s sake! And that track is still opening doors for us!

I live for moments like these. Moments where life comes full circle.

Now SpekrFreks are ready to continue on and keep rockin’ that electro shit.

Los Prisioneros

So in 1991 I went to Madrid, Spain to visit family and have a fun time. When I was there I remember watching MTV Espana! And on the TV I saw these videos. I was instantly in love. I was a fan of Synth-Pop music already but I had no idea that there was a Spanish Synth-Pop group. These guys are actually from Chile, and they are one of the main reasons SpekrFreks makes music today. Check out these videos. It’s the best classic Spanish Synth-Pop ever.

Bacon Wave

We are excited. We just signed, sealed, and delivered our latest contract with up and coming electro record label “Bacon Wave”

Our first assignment was to remix a new single by the band Relentless. We made a sort of electro-disco-80’s type of remix. It will be coming out in September.

Tonight we will be going to the San Francisco Minna Art Gallery to hang out with the Bacon Wave boy’s Relentless and Mephisto Odyssey @ their brand new Monthly party “SMUG”.

SMUG will be featuring some of San Francisco’s finest up and coming Electro acts. We will be DJing there in the next couple of months.

Over and out.

Dance Music conquers all!!

This could be just about the best scientific discovery ever: dance music could save your life.

Scientists have found that listening to just 50 minutes of uplifting dance music not only increases the levels of antibodies in your body, but it decreases your levels of stress hormones, which can weaken the immune system.

It gets even better, though. The researchers, from Sussex University and the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany, say their findings demonstrate how dance music could be used to help aid patients’ recovery while in hospital.

They found that playing music while a patient was under anesthetic during an operation helped to lower the levels of harmful stress hormones.

“We think the pleasant state that can be induced by music leads to special physiological changes which eventually lead to stress reduction or direct immune enhancement,” said Dr Ronny Enk, a neurocognition expert at the Max Planck Institute. “Stress reduction probably plays an important role, but the stress reducing effect seems to be different for various types of music.”

The researchers tested 300 people, asking them to listen to 50 minutes of happy, joyful dance music or to a random collection of tones (the stuff I usually listen to).

They found:

* People that listened to dance music had significantly lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, compared to a control group.
* After listening, the levels of the antibody immunoglobin A, the immune system’s first line of defense, were heightened.

“Listening to music in hospitals might show benefits for patients and may for example lead to shorter recovery times,” added Enk.

So next time you’re sick, remember that a dose of dance music could do your body some good.

SpekrFreks @ Yamagata

Here’s a video from our gig at Lazy Bear. Sooooooo gay yet soooo rave. It was fun. The boys were getting all sexified on the floor.

Lazy Bear recap

We had a great set at Yamagata. Lots of friends and lots of love for our electro pop gayness! The floor was packed and the mo’s were happy. Then afterwards, we partied …

This song and video makes me think of Lazy Bear Weekend a little bit.
The Bears are Coming is the name of the song!
